The Lantern Festival at Todai-ji Temple, also known as the “Mantokuyo-e,” takes place annually on August 15th. This festival is held on the final night of Obon to guide the spirits of loved ones who have passed away. Over 2,500 lanterns illuminate the Great Buddha Hall at Todai-ji, and the temple’s windows are opened to reveal the face of the Great Buddha from outside. Access Information
Todai-ji Temple is approximately a 15-minute walk from Kintetsu Nara Station. From JR Nara Station, you can take a bus to the Daibutsuden-mae bus stop. The Kintetsu line also offers convenient access from Nara Station. Additionally, the temple is easily accessible by train from major hubs like Osaka and Kyoto. During the festival, it is recommended to use public transportation due to increased visitor numbers.
